If you have received a Notice of Federal Tax Lien it is a collection procedure used by the IRS to protect its interest in back taxes.

It is a claim against property including property that may be acquired after the lien is in place.

Generally once a Notice of Federal Tax Lien is in place the IRS is unable to issue a “Certificate of Release of Federal Tax Lien” until the taxes, penalties, interest and recording fees are resolved.

Often the Notice of Federal Tax Lien is followed by a “Notice of Levy” which the IRS uses to confiscate and sell personal or business assets to satisfy back taxes, such as a car or real estate.
